The magic of Tybee Beach

"It enclosed us in its laceries as we watched the moon spill across the Atlantic like wine from an overturned glass. With the light all around us, we felt secret in that moon-infused water like pearls forming in the soft tissues of oysters."
Pat Conroy

I have never witnessed a more magical, ever changing beach as this one. Every time i cross my boardwalk, over the dunes and unveil the beauty of this beach, I am amazed. Its never the same and always gorgeous...how is that? a love like this, to that, with all its different faces it is still loved..more and more and for all captivating reasons. One day it has thousands of charming simple shells the next none, one the sun shines like the moon, the waves look as pristine & peaceful as a lake. It seems like infinite miles of sand, with the radiant sun beaming and the wild, untamed, headstrong surf. The ocean, the beach, the moon, the sun...the products of the coast are as mysterious as they are breathtakingly divine. It brings me to life.

Katie and I...and a car. The beauty of Isle of Hope and the Wormsloe Plantation. 1 1/2 miles of live oaks...absolutely breathtaking to say the very least. Ended the day at my favorite unwind....a beer and a dozen on the marsh. PERFECT!

In Atlanta, the first question is 'What's your business?' In Macon, it is 'Where do you go to church?' In Augusta they want your grandmother's maiden name. But in Savannah, the first question is 'What would you like to drink?'

Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.

The life of a novice cobbler on the beach.
Actually constructing a flat sandal. Designing, picking out leather, cutting it, turning it, sewing it. Building the sole and inner sole. Next week we will head to the Gulf stream factory where will construct our heels. CRAZY!
The afternoons with Gigi on the Beach...she loves it. Chasing the gulls, throwing her hands in the air as they fly over her head, digging like a puppy in the sand, collecting shells...the beach and it endless entertainment.

Another great Lunch at Cha-Bella with Katie...we two are experts at lunch in Savannah! Gigi joined us this time. This all organic gem, was fabulous. Thursdays only as they prepare their Earth to Table bags, 9 pounds of their own grown vegetables, a loaf of fresh baked bread, and demonstration by the chef dvd on how to prepare the items. 25$ delivered to your door!! wow.

As my Monday's & Wednesday's go....early is the only way to describe them....but so worth it. A stunning drive over the Tybee causeway just as the sun rises, followed by 3 hours of an all inspiring lecture and studio. Wow, who knew that shoes were made this way. My first project is a to design & construct a sandal. So the past 3 classes have been filled with all these little techniques and secrets of the trade, mind boggling. Going into this class I had not met one pre-requistie and there were a few! I am sitting surrounded by 2 grad students & 2 seniors, who clearly know much more than me....my skills would consist of sewing on a button. So my patient prof. had to explain everything down to how to use an x-acto blade. My school supply shopping list was a doozie, 27 items long and I knew what 40% of them...What the hell is oaktag pattern paper, I had these people running around the store like a bunch of lab rats.
Now on to the shoe... Luckily I have 2 little elves sitting in a town far far away...sending me ideas by the minute. Love my little squirrels, hagen & alex.

Yet another day at the pink house! Another little Tybee salad & glass of champagne. But the best part of this lunch was the 2 hours of catch up with my long lost friend Katie. As the mysteriousness of Savannah would have it, we both moved here within the same week.

Followed by an evening at Tybee with Lee, Katie, and Nora. Nora watched squirrels for hours, we cooked a delicious dinner, and tried to play rumi-cube, no luck to much wine. Entranced in conversation, what a great evening, looking forward to many many more.

What a Savannah 24 hours with Mom & Bob....
25 cent yummy Oysters at Bernie's where Tracy put sponge bob on the bar tv for the G. Then a morning stroll up Whitaker & Bull. Followed by a delicious lunch at the Pink House...bloody's, blue crab beignets, and my all time favorits pork goat cheese & fried egg salad. MMMMM....a very large nap was needed. And now more food....a bob special. More to come.
Off to cut some leather for my shoes.

Our First week has come to an end...so amazing Gigi & I are truly beat!! She slept for about 6 hours today. So much for hitting the local shops this afternoon. She woke at 4:30, we headed to at least one...then as life on an island would have it...hours of operation are not important. A walk on the beach instead, one of the most peaceful I can remember. The calm waves and the sunset hues stretching across the expansive dunes. What a wonderful relaxed feeling to be here!! I love island life, go figure.
The rest of the past week was inspiring to say the very least. SCAD might be the most impressive college in this country. As my professor put it the Disney World of Art Schools. He is RIGHT! I've learned more than I could have imagined in only 5 hours of classes.
Gigi's daycare is adorable as are the people. She actually looked at me and said NO wednesday when I came to pick her up!
Savannah puts Charleston to shame...The homes, cafes, shops, and mysterious Live Oaks filled with Spanish Moss are so charming...its like snow in the winter.
Looking forward to my days to come with Mom & Bob. May, Hagen & Alex!!!! I see buckets of Oysters, board games, screen porches, margaritas, & grezzzzzey music in our future!

Love and miss all of you!

Home sweet home

Home sweet home...for a couple of months. Gigi and I have picked up and headed East, so I can learn to cobble at SCAD.
The beach is peaceful, the spanish moss mysterious, the oysters delicious.
Come see us!
